Saving the Oregon Silverspot
Native Violets: The Foundation of Survival
The federally threatened Oregon silverspot butterfly is a shimmering jewel of our maritime meadows. Its survival is inextricably linked to the early blue violet—the only plant species that can sustain its larvae. As coastal development and invasive species encroach on these delicate salt spray meadows, the native violets vanish, taking the butterflies with them. We are dedicated to restoring these critical habitats, ensuring the foundation of our coastal ecosystem remains intact.
Garden Under Development –
Opening Late Summer 2026
A Living Classroom in Lincoln County
We are partnering with Hatfield Marine Science Center to create a demonstration garden for native plants of the Oregon coast. The garden will service as a vibrant educational anchor for the community. Here, you can witness the architectural beauty and ecological benefits of Oregon coastal native plants firsthand. From pollinator-friendly meadows to shaded woodland edges, we will showcase practical designs that anyone can bring to their own backyard to help restore our local ecosystem.
Cultivating Ecological Resilience Across Lincoln County
The Midcoast Initiative is dedicated to restoring Oregon’s natural coastal heritage. Through educational deep-dives, a vibrant demonstration garden, and hands-on how-to guides, we empower our community to transform landscapes into thriving habitats for local pollinators and wildlife. Together, we are growing awareness of how native plants are a key building block of a sustainable future for the Oregon coast.
